Challenge 5: Celebration & Event Planner

Challenge status: Ongoing

Challenge period: 19 October 2026 to 1 November 2026

Submission deadline: 1 November 2026 at 11:59 PM IST

Organized by: Hack2skill in collaboration with Google for Developers

Mission Brief

Create a GenAI-powered planning assistant that helps users organize weddings, birthdays, and community events with budgets, timelines, vendor checklists, and personalized ideas.

The Goal

Build a seamless GenAI application, compete on the leaderboard, and earn Prompt Credits that may be redeemed for eligible developer merchandise.

The central objective is to create a useful application that simplifies the event planning process. Rather than offering only a collection of static suggestions, your solution should help users move from an initial idea to an actionable event plan.

What Is an AI-Powered Celebration and Event Planner?

Planning an event involves many interconnected tasks. Someone organizing a wedding may need to coordinate venues, catering, decorations, photography, invitations, and guest arrangements. A birthday party may require a different set of vendors, a smaller budget, and a more personalized theme.

Community events introduce their own requirements, including scheduling, participant coordination, equipment, and venue management.

An AI-powered event planner can bring these activities together in a single workspace.

Users could describe their event in natural language, provide their budget and preferences, and receive a structured plan that they can review and modify.

For example, a user might enter:

"I want to organize a birthday party for 30 guests with a budget of ₹20,000.
I prefer an outdoor venue, simple decorations, vegetarian food, and a photography service."

The application could use this information to suggest an event plan, estimate spending across categories, prepare a timeline, and generate a checklist of tasks that still need attention.

The purpose of the challenge is to turn this type of experience into a functional GenAI-powered application.

What Should You Build?

The problem statement identifies four important areas: budgets, timelines, vendor checklists, and personalized ideas.

Your application should address these requirements in a way that is useful to its intended users.

1. Smart Event Budget Planner

Budget management is one of the most important parts of organizing an event.

Build a feature that lets users set a total budget and distribute it across categories such as:

  • Venue and booking charges
  • Catering and refreshments
  • Decorations and flowers
  • Photography and videography
  • Entertainment
  • Invitations and stationery
  • Transportation and miscellaneous expenses

The application could suggest an initial budget allocation based on the event type, guest count, and user preferences.

Allow users to adjust estimated costs and compare planned spending with their budget.

Where AI generates estimates, clearly label them as estimates rather than confirmed vendor prices. The application should not imply that a vendor is available or that a booking has been made unless this has actually been verified.

2. Event Timeline and Task Scheduler

Event planning involves tasks that must happen in the right order.

A timeline feature could generate a preparation schedule based on the event date. It might suggest when to shortlist venues, confirm vendors, send invitations, finalize menus, and complete last-minute arrangements.

Useful functionality could include:

  • A date-based event timeline
  • Task deadlines and reminders
  • Task completion tracking
  • Priority labels
  • A countdown to the event
  • A day-of-event schedule

The AI assistant could customize the schedule according to the event type, size, and time remaining.

3. AI-Powered Vendor Checklist

Finding and coordinating vendors can be time-consuming.

Your application could generate a customized vendor checklist according to the event requirements.

For a wedding, this might include a venue, caterer, decorator, photographer, makeup artist, and entertainment provider. For a birthday party, the checklist could focus on a cake, decorations, food, invitations, and photography.

Users should be able to add vendors, record contact information, track quotations, and mark bookings as pending or confirmed.

If you integrate real vendor listings, distinguish verified information from AI-generated recommendations. Do not present fictional businesses or invented contact details as real vendors.

4. Personalized Event Ideas

This is where Generative AI can make the experience more useful and distinctive.

The assistant could generate ideas based on:

  • Event type and theme
  • Budget and guest count
  • Preferred colors and decorations
  • Venue type
  • Dietary preferences
  • Cultural or personal preferences supplied by the user
  • Age group and intended atmosphere

For example, a user planning a small birthday celebration could receive theme suggestions, decoration concepts, menu ideas, and a preparation checklist tailored to their budget.

The application should let users refine the suggestions through follow-up prompts rather than forcing them to restart the planning process whenever a requirement changes.

Project Ideas to Consider

You do not need to build every possible event-planning feature. A focused, well-implemented solution can be more useful than an application containing many incomplete features.

Here are several directions you could explore.

Idea 1: AI Event Planner

Build an all-in-one planning assistant that creates an event plan from a natural-language description.

The user enters the event type, date, location, guest count, and budget. The application generates a structured plan containing tasks, budget categories, vendor requirements, and personalized ideas.

This is a suitable direction if you want to address the complete problem statement through a single workflow.

Idea 2: Wedding Planning Copilot

Focus specifically on wedding planning.

The application could help users coordinate wedding functions, prepare vendor checklists, organize guest-related tasks, track estimated expenses, and create a timeline for each function.

A specialized application can offer a more tailored experience than a generic event planner.

The strongest version of this idea would combine conversational AI with actual application features such as editable tasks, budget tracking, and saved event plans.

How Can You Make Your Project Stand Out?

The challenge asks for a functional GenAI-powered application. Your implementation should therefore demonstrate how AI helps users complete real planning tasks.

Consider the following improvements:

Create a complete user workflow. Let users provide event details, generate a plan, edit it, and return to it later.

Use structured AI responses. Instead of displaying a long block of generated text, organize the output into budget categories, tasks, timelines, and recommendations.

Make plans editable. AI-generated results should be starting points that users can adjust to reflect their actual needs.

Handle errors gracefully. Show useful messages when an AI request fails, required information is missing, or the generated response cannot be processed.

Prioritize accessibility and usability. Use readable typography, clear navigation, keyboard-friendly controls, and responsive layouts.

Test the important workflows. Verify that budget calculations, task completion, date handling, and AI-generated plans behave correctly.

Deploy a working application. The deployed version should be accessible to evaluators and should demonstrate the core features described in your submission.

A polished interface helps, but it should support the underlying functionality rather than replace it.

Submission Instructions: What You Must Submit

Provide a live project URL that evaluators can open and test.

Ensure the Demo Video Is Accessible

Use an unlisted YouTube video or a Google Drive video with the necessary access permissions.

Maximum Three Submissions

For this challenge round, participants are allowed to submit at most three times.

Treat each submission carefully. Review your project, repository permissions, deployed application, demo video, written explanations, and LinkedIn link before using a submission attempt.

The instructions supplied for this round do not specify whether every resubmission replaces an earlier entry or how the attempts are counted. If you need clarification on this point, confirm it with the organizers before submitting.

How Will Your AI Code Submission Be Evaluated?

The challenge uses AI-based code evaluation.

According to the published submission information, the evaluation covers six parameters.

1. Code Quality

The implementation should be organized, readable, maintainable, and consistent. Separate responsibilities appropriately and avoid unnecessary complexity.

2. Security

Protect API keys and credentials, validate user inputs, handle sensitive information carefully, and avoid exposing secrets in source code or client-side configuration.

3. Efficiency

Avoid unnecessary operations, handle AI requests sensibly, and keep the application responsive. Consider loading states, request failures, and the cost of repeated AI calls.

4. Testing

Test the main workflows and important edge cases. Verify that budget calculations, task updates, form validation, and AI responses work as expected.

5. Accessibility

Make the application usable for people with different accessibility needs. Use appropriate labels, sufficient contrast, keyboard navigation, clear error messages, and responsive layouts.

6. Problem Statement Alignment

Your application must address the Celebration & Event Planner problem statement.

Features related to event budgets, timelines, vendor checklists, and personalized ideas should be meaningful and functional. Generative AI should contribute to the planning experience rather than exist only as a decorative chat interface.

These parameters are the published evaluation categories, not a guarantee of a particular scoring formula or ranking. Refer to the official challenge page for any additional evaluation details.

Challenge Timeline and Deadline

The official schedule supplied for Challenge 5 is:

  • Challenge starts: 19 October 2026 at 4:33 PM IST
  • Submission closes: 1 November 2026 at 11:59 PM IST

The submission deadline is important because the project must be deployed, the repository made public, the demo video prepared, and all mandatory form fields completed before the cutoff.

Avoid waiting until the final minutes to deploy or submit. Hosting issues, broken links, repository permissions, and video-access problems can take time to resolve.

Aim to finish implementation early enough to test the entire submission from the perspective of an evaluator.
